MARY COOK AWARD
The Society set up and administers the Mary Cook Award scheme which aims to support
young musicians principally in the primary sector and those who want to pursue a
career in music at university. Nominations are sought throughout the year for grants
to primary schools and in the spring term for candidates for the occasional bursaries
which are awarded. Brentwood Arts Council helps by providing some finance towards
the Awards which are made.
Details and application forms are available from the Secretary.
IN THE COMMUNITY
Whilst it has a very busy rehearsal and performing programme, the Society is always
happy to take part in other local events. For a number of years, it has taken part
in carol concerts at the Marillac Hospital.
We also work with schools where we can, using local school choirs where the music
being performed calls for the involvement of a children’s choir. In July 2011, we
performed John Rutter’s Mass of the Children in Brentwood Cathedral and were delighted
at the Ursuline School Chamber Choir could take part.
Each year we invite the choir of a local junior school to take part in our popular
annual Music for Christmas, a great opportunity for the youngsters to sing to a large
audience and to sing with a large professional orchestra.
